DBA Versus PhD – My choice.

DBA (Professional doctorate program) requires a portfolio of course work, seminar presentations, and industry-relevant research reports. Encourages the candidate for more applied outcomes. PhD (Traditional doctorate) focus on single PhD thesis. Expected to contribute to new body of knowledge. DBA is a professional doctorate for managers and the PhD is a professional doctorate for academics.

I have chosen to pursue a DBA in Nonprofit Leadership and Management. My work with Nonprofits requires specialized knowledge in the areas of Donor Management and Investment Management. This knowledge cannot be acquired simply by performing research. I need to pursue, obtain, and apply this research so that I am comfortable in applying it in the “real” world.

The DBA can lead to a variety of careers. Options include:

  • Consultants
  • Managers
  • Educators
  • Administrators
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Writers/Authors
  • Nonprofit Executive Directors

The DBA prepares graduates for experience in these fields through coursework in management topics and related research.

Most Doctoral degrees range between Five and Seven years in length. I am on track to complete my Doctorate exactly at the Five year mark. My scheduled graduation date is May 21, 2022. This is a very exciting date to receive. It puts a reality stamp on my ability to actually achieve my goal of becoming a Doctor.
